Social Emotional Learning- Mrs Piccini
International Dot Day
September 15th is International Dot Day. 'The Dot' is a picture book by Peter H. Reynolds. It’s an inspiring story about having confidence to believe in yourself and to encourage and nurture others. All children struggle at some point and feel like they just can't do something. When the main character of the book, Vashti, is encouraged by her teacher to just "make a mark and see where it takes you" it marks the beginning of Vashti's journey of surprise and self-discovery. The book is about the creative spirit in all of us and that if we take a risk, surprising things can happen. At St Joseph’s we are always reminding the students of how important it is to have a go and be willing to make mistakes because that’s what learners do. If we don’t make mistakes, we don’t learn!
Stage 3 read this book in Term 1 and it led us to a discussion about how they could ‘make their mark’ in 2020 as the leaders of the school. They had a lot of fun creating their dots on Tuesday. The only requirement we gave them was to make a dot, the rest was up to them. It was exciting to see their creative spirits shine through.
