    Principals Message

    Dear Families,

What an amazing Week 9 we have had, Year 5 leadership speeches, the Leaders 'thank you' afternoon, Wildfire came to St Joseph's, the Swimming Carnival and the SRC Fun day. Throw in Pie Day Friday and it has been one perfect week. A wonderful positive this week was that because we are currently within walking distance of the Evans Head Pool, our Kinder and Year 1 students were able to join us at the Swimming Carnival for the very first time.

This weekend we come together to celebrate the third Sunday of Advent.

Hope is like a candle, shining like a light in a dark place.  Jesus, you are light in the world. Jesus, you light the way.  Peace … Joy … Love …

Over a hundred people, from the ages of two to eighty years old, were asked the question, “What brings you joy?” From the voices of different generations, hear their answers:

    Teenager Adult child Older adult
Sleeping in my own bed after a night away A clean Kitchen Being outside Sand between my toes
The beach Having a camera in my hands When my parents pick me up My partner's laugh
Baby giggles The end of my to-do list My cat Hugs from my neice and nephew
Stargazing Putting my hands into the garden Bedtime books Forever friends
Sleeping in Coffee with friends Time with family My new granddaughter
    Talking with friends
    download_10_.jpg

This weekend we light the candle of joy.

May its light remind us of all the good news this season brings. May its light remind us of the many sources of joy in our lives, and may that joy not only draw us closer to one another but closer to God.

    WOODBURN CHRISTMAS CAROLS 2022

We have been invited to sing at the Woodburn Christmas Carols this year on Saturday 17 December 2022. I am aware that we finish school on Friday 16 December, however, I feel it is more important than ever that we support our Woodburn community. I am asking that we have as many students as possible attend and represent St Joseph's at this community event.
The children understand the importance of the Woodburn Carols and want to be involved to give back to our community. We will be singing songs from the Christmas Concert.  The students are to wear their school uniform with Christmas hats or decorations.
The proposed schedule for the night is -
    6 pm Music, barbecue, carols.
    6.45 pm Pre-school
    7 pm St Joseph's
    7.15 pm Woodburn Public School
    7.30 pm Tree lighting

    STUDENT MATH ASSESSMENT INTERVIEWS

    2023

    download_11_.jpg
Our school continues to be an EMU (Extended Mathematical Understanding) school and as such, our teachers will again do Maths Assessment Interviews with each student individually for Years 1-6 over the first two days of the 2023 school year.

The students in Years 1-6 will be required to attend the school for a Maths Assessment Interview on one of the first two days of school: Monday 30 January, and/or Tuesday 31 January 2023.
Each student assessment takes approximately 30 minutes. The Best Start Testing for 2023 Kindergarten students will occur during the same time-  the MAI is included in that testing.

All students in Year 1-Year 6 will commence normal classes on Wednesday 1 February 2023. Kindergarten will commence their first day of 'Big School' on Friday 3 February.

Interview times will be available for you to book online on Compass in January- the date is to be confirmed due to the rollover.  A Compass notification to remind you of the MAI"s and the need to book will be sent in January.

Once students are mapped on the Mathematical Assessment Interview, the staff
will have a better understanding of their ability, their individual needs and how to
make changes through the Intervention Process.  Thank you for your cooperation and support of your child's Mathematical understanding and progress.

    STEP UP DAY

download_1_.pngNext Tuesday 13 December, we will have a step-up session. During the middle 2 hours of the school day, 11.40 am- 1.40 pm the students will spend 'getting-to-know-you' time with their teacher for next year. The step-up day is an opportunity
for students and teachers to get to know each other and their new cohort, their interests, goals and learning style.

      RELIGIOUS MATTERS- Megan Boyd

      SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION:

Gospel Reading: Third- Sunday of ADVENT Year A
      Matthew 11:2-11
Jesus tells John the Baptist of the signs of the kingdom that are being worked through him and praises John as more than a prophet.

      Advent_3.jpg
This Sunday is traditionally called “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete is the Latin word that means “Rejoice!” We call the day “Gaudete Sunday” because one of the prayers for Mass, taken from Paul's Letter to Philippians, is this: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near.”

We rejoice in knowing that Jesus is the Messiah. He saves us and gives us eternal life in heaven with him. During Advent we can share our joy with others by being helpful generous and kind to others, just as Jesus was.

Lismore Dioceses WILDFIRE MISSION TEAM VISIT

Spirit-filled energy was in the room when the Diocesan Mission Team

      WILDFIRE_Capture.JPG
WILDFIRE entertained and lead our students through a joyous retreat experience that focussed on the themes of Christmas. Our students reflected upon the significance and importance of the Christian message of hope, peace, joy, and love celebrated at Christmas because of the birth of Jesus.

With the Wildfire team's support Our Stage Two and Stage Three students reflected, sang, prayed, and prepared a beautiful Nativity presentation for the whole school.

I would like to that Rachael Kama and her talented team of musicians for their professionalism and the happiness they brought to the children.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hamper

      Webpage_Graphic_v2_Giving_Tree_22_.png

Next Monday we will celebrate an Advent Liturgy to reflect on the significance of Advent as a time of preparation for Christmas. During these liturgies, the children will be reminded of the importance of being generous and giving to the poor and needy in our community. This year you may like to donate items to place in the school Christmas hamper that will be given to our local St Vincent de Paul Society. Donations of non-perishable food such as pasta, rice, popcorn, canned food, and Christmas treats such as Christmas cake and puddings may be left with Mrs Feros at the school Office by Wednesday 14th December. Thank you for your generosity.

St Joseph's Woodburn - SPIRIT OF JESUS AWARD

      MJR.PNG

Peter Mitchell who wrote the"Making Jesus Real" books spoke to our students about the Spirit of Jesus and how we can be living disciples of Jesus. He explained that "spirit" can sometimes be a difficult word to understand but the spirit of Jesus is something that we can feel in our hearts and see through other people.

If we have the spirit of Jesus in our hearts, then we are kind, compassionate, welcoming, cheerful, friendly, encouraging, giving, forgiving thankful, and respectful

Our SPIRIT OF JESUS award recipients this week are Amelia Hume and Lilyjoy Walkington.

      Stage 2 Nativity Scenes

This week Stage 2 has worked hard to create nativity scenes to retell the Christmas story. They have used recycled materials after being inspired by the Wildfire visit.

      SPORT NEWS - Mrs Barnes

      St Joseph’s Swimming Carnival 2022

St Joseph's annual swimming carnival was held last Thursday 8 December 2022 at Evans Head Aquatic Centre.

A special thank you once again to all our fantastic parent helpers ( too many to name) who gave so generously of their time to make this year's carnival so successful. Thank you Helen, for providing our delicious lunch.

It was wonderful to see so many parents who came along to support their children this year at the swimming carnival. A special mention to all the wonderful parents who swam in the parent races - we appreciate it.

Congratulations to all the students who participated and cheered for their team during the carnival. Superb team spirit and great sportsmanship were shown throughout this year's carnival.

Well done to our dedicated Colour House Captains who organised their teams' war cries and relays before and during the carnival. Many thanks to the fabulous staff of St Joseph's who worked tirelessly prior to and throughout the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly.
