Week 5 Term 3
Dear Families,
In the last week, we have received many updates on the COVID 19 guidelines for schools due to the current situation in Sydney. The updates have been received from the Catholic Schools Office Lismore, Catholic Schools NSW and NSW Health. An email was sent to you earlier this week with current guidelines for parents.
Today we have received this email from Dr Sally Towns:
As per the latest NSW Government requirements, from Monday 24 August 2020 staff and students exhibiting even mild COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and required to produce proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to school.
Thank you in advance for adhering to these guidelines.
Other symptoms can include runny nose, headache, muscle or joint pains, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of sense of smell, altered sense of taste, loss of appetite and fatigue.
COVID 19 Practices Term 3
- Non-essential adults are not be permitted to enter the school grounds. We ask that no parents enter the school past the front office. All inquiries to the front office, please.
- Pick up and drop off will continue out the front of the school.
- We have resumed our Canteen and will continue to offer this if we are able to get parent volunteers to assist. The Parent helpers will be advised of the mandatory hygiene practices at the front office. PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE ON 66822468 IF YOU ARE ABLE TO GO ON TO THE CANTEEN ROSTER FOR TERM 3.
- It is paramount in these times, in particular, that any child who is unwell is kept at home. We appreciate your understanding and consideration for the safety of the other students and the staff.
- Our bubblers will still not to be used and therefore the children require a water bottle.
- Our stringent hygiene practices for our new normal continue with: the washing of hands regularly; sanitiser after eating, no food or drinks to be shared; coughing and sneezing into elbows, tissues discarded immediately, cleaning of the desks between lunch and recess breaks and extra cleaning of the school by our cleaners.
Kiss and Drop
Our current situation with student pickup can sometimes be a bit slow, purely due to the increased numbers. I want to thank you all for your patience, courtesy and understanding to date. It is timely however that as parents, grandparents and caregivers, we revisit the way the 'kiss and drop' is used at St Joseph's. Please pass the following information onto any relative or caregiver who will be picking up or dropping off your child/ren.
The turning circle out the front of the school is used for a “Kiss and Drop” area before school and during parent pick up each afternoon. It is essential that traffic moves safely and smoothly through this area so we have some clear regulations around the use of this.
- This is a NO PARKING area during 8:00-9:30 am and 2:30-4:00 pm. Please do not leave your vehicle during these times.
- Please always drive as far around the circle as you can before stopping to collect your child. This allows all cars to move smoothly.
- For the safety of our students, this is only to be used if your child can get themselves into their car seat, and their seatbelt on by themselves. Parents should not leave their car during this time.
- If you are unable to safely use the Kiss and Drop with your child, please park in the designated parking bays opposite the church and walk around to the front of the school to collect your child safely.
Important Reminders
HAIRSTYLES
Hair is to be worn in a tidy fashion with long hair being tied back. Boys’ hair is to be above the collar. If the hair is longer than collar length it is required to be tied back. Fringes are not to impede vision. Hair must remain its natural colour.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sunday Gospel Reading: 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Matthew 16:13-20
Simon Peter acknowledges Jesus as the Christ and is given the key to the Kingdom of Heaven.
In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus recognizes the disciple Peter as an important leader because Peter shares his belief that Jesus is the Messiah – the Son of God. Jesus praises Peter for this and commends his faith and witness.
Sometimes our faith is tested and we doubt, but Peter's faith and trust in God in this week's reading were so strong it enabled Jesus to describe Peter as the "ROCK" who he can build his church. At this moment Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom of God's love. We could ask ourselves; are we living the values of the kingdom? That is forgiveness, love, justice and compassion.
Being grateful for the little things in life is so very important. Sometimes we forget to appreciate the everyday pleasures and simple things we come in contact with each day. We often look to God with our problems and difficulties and forget to be grateful for all that he has already given us.
The link below was used by Mrs Joanne Spencer during staff prayer this week. This good-humoured clip has a powerful message for us all!

What If Everybody Said That?
Last week when I visited kindergarten we read the book ‘What If Everybody Said That?’ by Ellen Javernick.
If you tell someone that they can't play with you, there's no harm done, right? But what if everybody said that? What if everybody forgot to be kind...and made fun of other kids' artwork at school, or told a fib, or refused to share with a person in need? The world wouldn't be a very nice place to live. But what if everybody thought before they spoke, so the world would be a kinder place?
After we read and discussed the story, the Kindergarten students then drew a picture of something kind they could say to another person to make the world a better place.
If you would like to read this book with your child(ren), I have included a link to a Youtube read-aloud of it.
