Week 2- Term 1 - 2022
Dear Families
We have had a very settled Week 2, with our Year 6 leaders and buddies guiding the way, our Kindergarten students grabbing school life with gusto and all other students from Years 1 - 5 doing their best learning with the terrific enthusiasm that marks new beginnings.
We trust that it has been a smooth transition for you, our parents. We thank you for continuing to keep our students and staff safe by following the current COVID guidelines. We will keep you up to date on any changes as they happen. Please continue to check your emails that are sent through the Compass App.
PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT via Zoom
It is our usual practice, within the first few weeks of being back at school, to hold a parent information night to give parents the opportunity to hear about what the children will be learning throughout the year and the expectations around behaviour, positive attitude, goal setting, etc in each classroom/Stage. These meetings are then followed by individual parent/teacher interviews towards the end of Term 1 where together goals can be set for the 2022 school year.
We have made the decision to hold the St Joseph's Parent Information night via Zoom this year. As we are unsure of the COVID guidelines going forward, as a staff we felt that it was important for us to connect with you as soon as possible.
The Parent Meeting Zooms will be held Monday 21 February 2022.
- There will be 2 Zooms available for all parents:
6pm - 6.30pm
6.45pm - 7.15pm
The Zoom link will be sent out to parents from their Stage Teachers through Compass. There will be an opportunity at the end of the Zoom for question time. We hope to be able to catch up with all parents through this method.
BEGINNING SCHOOL MASS
Next Friday 18 February, at our 2022 beginning School Mass we will induct all of our School Leaders including, our School Captains and Vice Captains, Sports Captains, Mini Vinnies Presidents, Events Management Leaders and our Student Representative Council Leaders and members.
Unfortunately due to the current COVID guidelines, parents will not be able to join us.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT AT JOSEPH'S
PBS = Positive Behaviour Support
PBS encourages positive behaviour throughout the school and helps ensure the students feel safe in all areas. Collecting data helps us to identify students who need support with their behaviour.
St Joseph’s School Rules
Glossy is our school mascot. He inspires us to soar and do our best. Rainbow Lorikeets flock together so we can be reminded that we are like one at St Joseph’s and we need to work together as a team to achieve our potential as the great learners we can be.
Behaviour Matrix - Expected Behaviours
The school’s Behaviour Matrix is the central framework for the teaching of expected behaviours in all school settings. These behaviours are taught explicitly and repeatedly.
We have a behaviour matrix for each area of the school.
The expected behaviour is listed under the appropriate school rule.
This is to help the students feel safe and to understand what is expected of them and how that behaviour relates to each school rule.
Weekly Awards
Our weekly awards consist of a student of the week and one PBS award.
THE H TEAM (Brainstorm Productions)
Brainstorm Productions presented their student wellbeing performance 'The H Team' for Kinder to Year 6 today.
‘The H Team' is a live educational theatre performance that follows the story of Cal and Mindi, who are accidentally transported from the safety of the 'H Zone' and left without their positive mindsets. Peer pressure and social media make Mindi anxious, competitive and impulsive. Cal is being bullied and excluded at school. He becomes isolated and obsessed with junk food and video games. Cal and Mindi must learn to resist the lure of advertising and excessive screen time, stand up to bullying and make healthy decisions.
‘The H Team' is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and has been developed by teachers and psychologists. This exciting live theatre experience gives students the knowledge and confidence to cope with difficult emotions and critically evaluate negative messages from advertising and the media. They will learn practical strategies that can be used to build positive relationships, stay safe online and take care of their minds and bodies.
We thank Brainstorm Productions for their wonderful performances today and the important messages and strategies provided for the students. It might be a worthwhile conversation to have with your children around the importantsmessages from the production.
THE KISS AND DROP (Student Pick Up area)
- It is essential that traffic moves safely and smoothly through this area so we have some clear regulations around the use of this.
- This is a NO PARKING area during 8:00-9:30 am and 2:30-4:00 pm. Please do not leave your vehicle during these times.
- Please always drive as far around the circle as you can before stopping to collect your child. This allows all cars to move smoothly.
- For the safety of our students, this is only to be used if your child can get themselves into their car seat, and their seatbelt on by themselves.
Parents should not leave their car during this time.
- If you are unable to safely use the Kiss and Drop with your child, please park in the designated parking bays opposite the church and walk around to the front of the school to collect your child safely.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in ensuring the safety of our children.

The Engagement of Parents in School Life
As a Catholic learning community, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School strives to be welcoming and connected, supporting the engagement of parents as partners in their children’s learning and wellbeing, and their involvement in the life and community of the school and parish.
Parent engagement is more than volunteering and helping out at the school. While we value any contribution you can make to school life, we understand that work and family commitments can make it difficult to be involved in an ongoing way. However, you can still engage in your child’s learning and wellbeing by supporting and/or attending:
- Mass and prayer celebrations with the parish and school community
- Our Parish Based sacramental programs
- Parent information nights and parent/teacher meetings
- Parent Forum Meetings and community events –
- School assemblies
- School open days and special occasions
- Canteen- Mondays and Wednesdays 9 am- 11 am.
- ...and offering any other practical assistance either on-site or from home
Under the current COVID 19 guidelines, we are unable to invite parents on site for the first 4 weeks of school except for working in the Canteen.
Depending on the ongoing guidelines we will be in contact regarding Parent Forum meetings and other parent engagement opportunities.
IN WEEK 2 OF TERM WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL FOR:
- Our parents who volunteer to work in the Canteen.
- Kinder Play-Based Learning (Great job Mrs Barnes, Mrs Denison and Mrs White)
- Brainstorm Production of the 'H Team'
- All students for doing their absolute best to learn.
- Our Kindergarten students for adapting so well to 'Big School'
Have a wonderful weekend!
Regards
SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION:
6th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 6:17,20-26
Jesus teaches the crowd the way to happiness.
Many crowds gathered when Jesus started teaching. The people were probably surprised when they heard Jesus’ teaching. He said that thinking only about ourselves and having lots of things wouldn’t make us truly happy.
Sometimes our parents ask:
What do Catholics believe and do?
This year I will share with you what Catholics believe by focussing on current Catholic Social teachings. Catholic Social Teachings are founded on the messages of Jesus, the prophets and our church leaders. I will start with Care for our common home.
CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING: Care for our Common Home - Stewardship of Creation
The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us
Our changing environment prompts us to stop and think about how we live on our planet. We are called to respond and to adopt new ways of living as Pope Francis highlights in his encyclical, Laudato Si': On the Care for our Common Home.
It is the world’s poorest communities that are affected by changes to our planet. The Catholic Social justice agency Caritas Australia’s development programs are attentive to environmental concerns and seek to promote care for the earth and its resources.
At St Joseph’s our students reflect on caring for our common home through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching and a Catholic Worldview. They reflect upon why it is important to care for all creation, and the impact on the environment that their choices have at home, school and out in the community. They learn about the importance to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE whenever possible.
For more information and to gain a deeper understanding of the Catholic Social Teaching of Care for our Common Home for you and your family, I encourage you to take a look at the following information in this short video.
