Week 1 Term 2 - 2022
Dear Families
Welcome to Term 2, we've had a busy week to begin the term.
On Monday ANZAC Day: The student response to the acknowledgement of ANZAC Day March was excellent. As a staff we were proud and very grateful to the students who were able to represent St Joseph's at these very significant memorial services. There were about 20 children present at the dawn service with every class
represented even children from Kindergarten. Our School and Vice Captain,
Lorena and Clancy presented a speech about the importance of remembering our ANZACs and our Vice Captains, Kimberly and Clancy, laid a wreath on behalf of the School community.
At Woodburn, approximately 30 students participated in the march and ceremony. It was particularly important this year to support such a special day in Woodburn, our first time to be with the whole community since the floods. Kimberly and Clancy presented the speech, and Lorena and Clancy laid the wreath. It was an
outstanding representation from St Joseph's and I thank our students for seeing the importance of giving their time to represent our school on this most important day. Thank you also to our parents for making it possible for the children to be present on these occasions. All students were a credit to their families.
On Tuesday our first day back at school - we held our Cross Country in Evans Head for the first time. It was a terrific day with our students showing a lot of grit, determination and school spirit. Congratulations to all for doing your absolute best! Congratulations to Gahgun House (Green) the 2022 Cross Country Champions. A big thank you to Mrs Barnes for a perfectly organised event. An added bonus- it was fantastic to have our parents present again! Full details of the placings can be found in Mrs Barnes's part of the newsletter.
On Wednesday we celebrated the arrival of 3 demountable classrooms. We are grateful to the NSW Department of Education for their supply and loan. We hope to be moving into these within the next couple of weeks.
On Thursday, His Royal Highness Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge took the time to Zoom with a panel of 4 people to gain an understanding of the current situation of various aspects of the community following the floods. The panel included Mr Ashley Slap-Commander of the Woodburn SES, Mr Chris Binge-a local Indigenous leader from Cabbage Tree Island, Mr Ben Brown (Gympie)- a business owner who supported local businesses and provided meals for emergency workers and volunteers, and myself in the role of Principal of St Joseph's.
' The Duke of Cambridge told us that he was committed to helping raise and maintain awareness of the situation, he reassured us that he didn't want the community to feel forgotten'
The Duke's genuine concern about the ongoing situation and the well-being of the community helps to provide hope and encouragement during this very difficult time.
By Friday, we were all happy to take a break from the busyness of the week, we still continued with our learning, and we enjoyed immensely' Pie Day' Friday as well as the return of the weekly Awards.
We cant wait to see what week 2 holds!
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Our school will join with more than 620 Catholic schools across NSW and the ACT to celebrate the annual Catholic Schools Week (CSW). This will take place in the Diocese of Lismore from May 2 - 6.
This year’s theme “Community, Care, Compassion’’ echoes the broader mission of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Lismore, to provide opportunities for all of our students to experience life to the full as caring and compassionate school communities. It is particularly pertinent at this challenging time for our diocese and the world.
We are immensely proud of the role we play alongside our parish in maintaining the rich heritage that is Catholic Education in our community. This week provides us with the opportunity to showcase and celebrate the quality education we offer to the diverse range of students in our school.
We are currently a little restricted in the events that we are able to hold/run due to the works in progress around the school site. This week we are also looking to celebrate Mother's Day. Under the current circumstances, we have decided that on Friday we will celebrate a whole school Mass for both Catholic School's Week and Mother's Day. Following the Mass, we are working to provide a special morning tea for our mums.
MOTHER'S DAY
This year we are looking to celebrate our mums with a Mother's Day morning tea on Friday 6 May 2022 following the Catholic Schools Week/Mother's Day Mass.
A google form invitation will be sent next Monday for your RSVP. Please respond as soon as possible to let us know if you are able to join us.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO CELEBRATING WITH YOU!
IN WEEK 1 OF TERM 2 WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL FOR:
Mrs Barnes for organising a terrific Cross Country
HRH Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge for caring about our community.
The Catholic Schools Office for their continued support at our current site, particularly Kym Griffiths, Nigel McIntyre and John Wilson who have been with us on the ground every step of the way.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Regards
SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION:
Year C - 4th Sunday of Easter:
Gospel Reading: John 10: 27-30 In this week’s Gospel Jesus describes his care for his sheep.
A shepherd guides sheep so that they don’t get lost. He protects them from danger. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He loves us and guides us, just as a shepherd guides and cares for his sheep. He teaches us by his example how to be closer to God by building healthy relationships highlighted by love and forgiveness.
Sometimes our parents ask - What do Catholics Believe? Earlier this year I shared with you what Catholics believe by focussing on current Catholic Social teachings. Catholic Social Teachings are founded on the messages of Jesus, the prophets and our church leaders. This week we take a look at CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING - COMMON GOOD We should always try to think about what is good for everyone, not just ourselves. It is about living together in a community.
The common good is reached when we work together to improve the well-being of people in our society and the wider world. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged.
At St Joseph’s students explore the value of friendships and the gift of community, as well as how exclusion disrespects human dignity and the common good. This year we have observed the enormous generosity and the spirit of goodwill that prevailed by the Woodburn and surrounding communities during and after our recent flooding. We value that spirit as we continue to navigate the future.
By using Gospel stories such as the Good Samaritan; students investigate how Scripture shows us that God values relationships and community.
For more information and to gain a deeper understanding of the Catholic Social Teaching of COMMON GOOD for you and your family I encourage you to take a look at the following short video.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK and MOTHER'S DAY MASS
Friday 6th May 9:30 am at the ANGLICAN CHURCH EVANS HEAD
Theme: Community, Care, Compassion -
ALL ARE VERY WELCOME: - mothers, grandmothers, aunties and special friends to our Mass followed by morning tea
Catholic Schools Week is an important time of the year when we celebrate the role played by Catholic Schools, especially our own school St Joseph’s Woodburn, in enabling students to experience community, care and compassion.
It is a time when we acknowledge and give thanks for the exceptional teaching and learning that takes place in our school each day, and for all of those people who make Catholic Education possible. This week we also acknowledge and pray for our mothers who have shown us by their actions their care, compassion and the importance of community.
