Week 3 Term 3 - 2022
Dear Families
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day
Next Monday 8th August, we celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
While most Australians know Mary MacKillop's name, many are unaware of exactly what this compassionate, devout and determined young woman achieved in her lifetime or why she remains such an inspiration, not only to Australians but to men and women worldwide.
- The co-founder of the Josephites, the Sisters of St Joseph she was a tireless advocate of education and schools.
- Mary's unwavering commitment to those on the margins of society was constantly met with opposition. But with her strength of faith in God and her vision of a better world for all, St Mary refused to be daunted.
- Travelling extensively throughout Australasia, St Mary founded convents, charitable institutions and free schools for children in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and SA as well as New Zealand, at a time when most families had to pay to educate their children and only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school.
- Filled with affection and a deep love of children, St Mary radiated warmth and kindness matched with boundless energy. Charismatic, she literally could light up a room and she became an inspiration to almost everyone she met with her piety, humility and love of life.
In remembering our first Australian Saint: Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, we can learn much from her incredible vision, courage and leadership. We celebrated her Feast Day today with a Mass led by Stage 2.
Today more than ever, her sayings provide a guide for us to live by:
"Remember we are but travellers here.?(1866)
'We must teach more by example than by word.?(1867)
'Do all you can with the means at your disposal and calmly leave the rest to God.'(1891)
'Courage, courage, trust in God who helps you in all things?
'We feel our crosses hard at times, but our courage should rise with them.'(1882)
'Never see a need without doing something about it'
CONGRATULATIONS AYLA STAHL
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
It was wonderful for the whole school and her family to be a part of Ayla Stahl receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation at Mass today.
In Confirmation, Ayla receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit to strengthen her as she goes forward in life. When Bishop Homeing confirmed our students earlier this year, he discussed the three most important gifts to be received by the Holy Spirit during Confirmation that he and all parents wished for their children. The gift of Knowledge- to know the difference between right and wrong, the gift of Courage- to be able to follow through and do what is right, and finally the gift of Love -so that each of the children will always know that they are loved and be able to love others.
Congratulations Ayla!

Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop
Mary was born in 1842, she saw the power of education as a pathway out of poverty. It is why she devoted her life to breaking through the prejudice of the early 19th century to educate all regardless of gender, race, faith or wealth. Mary and the Sisters of St Joseph travelled to some of Australia’s most remote communities to set up schools. So disadvantaged children could gain an education.
The legacy of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop is alive today in the good works of the Sisters of St Joseph today. They continue today to tirelessly and selflessly care for and pray for marginalised people in need.
Mary's mantra, "Never see a need without doing something about it" resonates in the spirit of goodwill and generosity found within our school and parish community today Mary also spoke about having courage, trust, hope, love and the importance of having great faith in the goodness of God.
