Week 2 Term 4 - 2022
Dear Families,
We have had a fantastic Week 2 at St Joseph's. We look forward to a busy Term 4 and we are excited to send our Stage 3 students to Canberra next week. We look forward to hearing all about their incredible adventures and experiences when they return.
JUNIOR JOEYS
This week we welcomed back our Junior Joeys. They read the story Pete the Cat: I love my white shoes and made masks to help them retell the story. Junior Joeys spent time singing nursery rhymes, counting and learning about each other and their new school.
We look forward to our final week of Junior Joeys for 2022. Our last session is this Wednesday 26th of October. A 2023 Kindergarten Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday 2 November 2022 at 6 pm.
Lismore Diocese School Review Commission (LDSRC) Update
I’d like to introduce you to John Wilson. You may have already met John or seen him around the school. John is the Regional Service Leader for the catholic schools in the Richmond Region and a member of the Catholic Schools Office Leadership Team.
In the last week, we as a school community received the news that the insurer has identified that our school, at Woodburn Coraki Road, could not be insured. I know that this has caused a great deal of concern and has raised more questions than answers. John is going to give us an update each fortnight on the work of the Lismore Diocese School Review Commission and what it might mean for our school.
Hello, St Joseph’s parents and families,
It has been wonderful to meet some of you at Evans Head throughout the year so far. One of my favourite moments was being there on the first day at Evans Head and seeing everyone so happy to be together again.
In regards to what the future location of St Joseph’s looks like, there is still much that we don’t know but I can tell you what we do know. We now know for certain that the school can’t be insured at the Woodburn Coraki Road site. We don’t know exactly what that means yet. We do know that the Catholic Schools Office and the LDSRC intend to continue to support and develop our current school to ensure that quality teaching, learning and facilities are available to all our families. We do know that we have to plan for the future for St Joseph’s and what that might look like. We do know that the staff levels at St Joseph's will remain in place for 2023. We do know that our next step is to consult with families, staff and parish so the LDSRC can better understand what you as a community need and want, and what your ideas for the future of St Joseph’s are. This will commence in the coming weeks. As soon as the dates, times and details are finalised, Ms Wilkins will provide these to you.
I appreciate that it is frustrating that we don’t have all the answers yet and I sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding. I have asked Ms Wilkins if I can include a message each fortnight in your newsletters to keep you up to date with the progress of the LDSRC. If there are any significant updates, this will be communicated to you as soon as possible.
Warm regards
John Wilson

A visit from LJ the School Support Dog
This week we were lucky enough to have Janine Hanlon and LJ who is a trained school support dog visit our classrooms. The School Support Dog Program involves LJ as a form of support to improve students’ social, emotional or cognitive functioning. The key aim of the program is to promote empathy and wellbeing amongst children. Students had the opportunity to meet LJ and spend some time reading and talking to him. We look forward to LJ visiting us again. We thank Janine for volunteering her time to share LJ with us.
SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION:
Year C - The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel Reading
Luke 18:9-14
In this Sunday's Gospel Jesus tells the parable of the proud Pharisee who prayed big-noting himself to God about his achievements and the tax collector who prayed humbly.
When we are humble, we recognise our dependence and our need for God. We acknowledge that God is the source of the gifts and talents that we have, and we recognise that any good that we are able to do is because of God's grace working in us. So we are encouraged to be living disciples of Jesus being humble. forgiving, compassionate and thankful.
Len Moran: " Transforming the Spirit"
From the 11th to 13th of October 2022, Len was lucky enough to attend the Catholic Schools NSW and Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta co-hosting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Education NSW State Conference.
The conference's theme was "Transforming with the Spirit" This Conference brought together education and community practitioners to share unique perspectives on building systems and practices that allow students and families to thrive. The Conference attracted over 500 delegates including staff, students, the community and leaders of Catholic schools across NSW.
The Conference had amazing keynote speakers which included, Aunty Miriam Rose Ungunmerr Baumann and Anita Heiss, Brooke Boney, Dallas McInerney, Chief Executive Officer Catholic Schools NSW also the Hon Linda Burney MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, Member for Barton.
We thank Len for attending this conference and I am sure that we will see the fruits of his experience evident in our school as Len contributes to our school community in his role as our Indigenous Education Worker.
STUDENT DISCIPLESHIP: EXURO 2022
A Report written by Madison Kirk and Charlotte Robinson
Yesterday at Exuro we learned how to be disciples of Jesus. We were given groups to work in. We were both in the same group and we worked together to fill out our Journal. Some of the questions were about being a disciple of Jesus and the ways to try to be like Jesus. We also filled out a questionnaire about the challenges of being a disciple of Jesus. We are disciples of Jesus when we are kind to others, help people in need, respect other people's privacy, and treat people the way that we want to be treated.
In Session Two we wrote down the ways that we could be a disciple of Jesus using our hands, feet and eyes. We chose our best idea and put it on a poster to share with the rest of Exuro. In the last session, we prepared a Liturgy and we helped set up the prayer space. After the Liturgy, we had a ritual and they gave us an Exuro candle.
The highlight of our day and the best part of the day was the beautiful liturgy that we helped create. We should mention that we had lots of fun meeting new people and working in groups.
