    Principals Message

    Dear Families,

Last  Wednesday we had our final meeting for the parents of our Kindergarten 2021 students. It was well-attended and the perfect time for a conversation about a child’s first year at school. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Melissa Barnes for all her work with Junior Joey’s this year. A sentiment echoed from the parents at the meeting that day. She has done a wonderful job and is very excited about welcoming our new Kindergarten students in 2021. Thanks also to Mrs White for supporting Mrs Barnes and our new Kinders throughout the orientation and Mrs Shandell Parkinson for your support and assistance under the new Kindergarten guidelines.

It is timely that I was looking back through previous Kindergarten parent meeting prayers and came across '40 ways to pray by doing'. It is something that never dates and is a great reminder for each and every one of us. The prayer simply lists 40 ways to pray by reaching out and helping others.  It nicely complements our 'Making Jesus Real initiative at school where we all work to make Jesus real every day in every possible way. I’ve shared 9 of those forty ways with you this week. How will you pray today?

    PARENT FORUM MEETING

Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy - What is the Parent Forum? We are finally able to have Parent Forum meetings again, out of school hours.

Out first and final 2021 Parent Forum meeting post COVID restrictions will be held on Monday 30 November 2020 at 6 pm in the School Library.

We'd love to welcome as many parents as possible to the meeting. Agenda items will include setting a date for our 2021 Community Fair (restrictions permitting) and decisions about 2020 Class art auctions. All are welcome and invited to attend.

ST JOSEPH'S 2020 ART EXHIBITIONS AWARD RECIPIENTS:         Mrs Sharon Roxburgh

Thank you to all students and families who completed the voting for our St Joseph's Art Exhibition held during Book Week/Naidoc Week celebrations. Although every student was a winner simply by entering an art piece, the People's Choice votes have now ended and winners for each section received their Award and Prize at Wednesday's morning Assembly.

    Practices Term 4

    • Staff and students exhibiting even mild COVID-19 symptoms are to be sent home and required to produce proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to school.
    • Non-essential adults are not be permitted to enter the school grounds. We ask that no parents enter the school past the front office. All inquiries to the front office, please.
    • Pick up and drop off will continue out the front of the school.
    • Canteen for lunches only is continued to be offered if we are able to get parent volunteers to assist.
    • It is paramount in these times, in particular,  that any child who is unwell is kept at home. We appreciate your understanding and consideration for the safety of the other students and the staff.
    • Our bubblers will still not to be used and therefore the children require a water bottle.
    • Our stringent hygiene practices for our new normal continue with: the washing of hands regularly; sanitiser after eating, no food or drinks to be shared; coughing and sneezing into elbows, tissues discarded immediately, cleaning of the desks between lunch and recess breaks and extra cleaning of the school by our cleaners.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

    Regards

Celebrating the Feast of Christ the King:

      Christ_the_King.JPG

      Matthew 25:31-46
Jesus teaches that when the Son of Man comes in glory, and he will judge the nations.

Jesus came to teach us how to live good lives and to be happy. He gave us the keys to live in right relationships, to be people of justice and compassion, and to be loving peacemakers. There is nothing else we need – just the right key.

Jesus says the key to happiness is:

      • looking after those who are hungry and thirsty.
      • welcoming and accepting of people whom you don’t know very well, or are new to you.
key_to_happiness.png* showing care for people who are lonely and afraid.
      • * forgiving others and show mercy to them.
      • * looking after those who are sick and care for them.
      • * working hard at showing compassion and understanding for others.

Donut Thinking: Are you Looking At The Hole or The Donut-y Goodness?

A few months ago the Parent Assembly organised a wonderful webinar with child psychiatrist, Dr Kaylene Henderson. She had lots of great advice on bringing out the best in our children. One thing in particular that stood out to me was ‘donut thinking’. When we look at a donut, we think about the donut-y goodness. We don’t think ‘Oh no, it’s got a piece missing in the middle’. This is a really useful analogy that we can use with our children to keep their problems in perspective and to have an attitude of gratitude.

Example 1: I don’t want to do my homework (hole). Donut-y goodness = as soon as I finish my homework, I can do something fun.

Example 2: One of my classmates said something unkind today (hole). Donut-y goodness = My friend stood up for me.

Example 3: It’s raining and now we can’t go to the park (hole). Donut-y goodness = Mum said we can play board games together instead.

A useful question we can ask our children is “Are you looking at the hole or the donut-y goodness?” You might find this particularly useful over the school holidays!
